This Byzantine fortress is located on the plateau of Mount Tepe-Kermen (544 m). It is translated as "a fortress on a mountain." It is believed to have been built in the late 6th century. Local residents used it as a shelter until the 10th and 11th centuries. It became a city in the late 12th - early 13th centuries. According to one version, it was destroyed by Tamerlane in the late 14th century. Over 230 artificial caves, a cave church, graves and remnants of foundations have survived to this day.
