The construction of this artillery fortress defending the entrance to the Sea of Azov began in 1857 and took 20 years. The fortress had a system of countermine galleries and underground tunnels, including listening passages. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was used as a warehouse, and after the 1917 revolution, the dungeons of Fort Totleben were used to contain political prisoners. After the war, a penal battalion was stationed at Fort Totleben. The surviving structures in the fortress are unique pieces of fortification.
