An ancient Karaite cemetery at the foot of Chufut-Kale. The name translates as "The axe shall not touch" and has to do with the rock oaks growing here, especially revered by the Karaites. It is believed that the first burials at the cemetery were made in the middle of the 13th century. Because of the soil mobility on the slope, it is difficult to say exactly how many graves are located here, but researchers estimate at least 5,000.
Locals continue to be buried in Balta-Tiymez. The Karaites attach special, sacred significance to this place.
