The Genoese Fortress was built in the 14th century. Few fragments of the fortifications have survived to this day. The fortress was built to protect Kafa, Crimea's major port. After the Thessaloniki Fortress in Greece, it was the second largest and one of the most powerful fortresses in Europe. It was located to the south of the city on the coast of the Bay of Feodosia. It has two lines of defence fortifications that were 718 m long, while the walls were up to 11 m high and up to 2 m thick. Today, the site accommodates a historical and architectural reserve.
