This is one of the most popular exhibits of the State Museum of the Heroic Defence and Liberation of Sevastopol. It is also one of the 60 largest panoramas in the world and tells the story of the 349 day long defence of the city during the Crimean War. In order to create the panorama, artist Franz Roubaud visited bastions and batteries, spoke to those who took part in the defence and made almost 50 sketches. He chose the day when the defenders stopped the assault on the Malakhov Kurgan and Korabelnaya Storona for the panorama.
