The monument was erected in 1898 to mark the 45th anniversary of the Battle of Sinop led by Pavel Nakhimov, but in 1928 it was replaced with a statue of Lenin. However, in 1959 the monument to the outstanding admiral returned to its place, based on the old blueprints. This monument can be seen on the square today.
