The ancient polis-fortress was located 16 km from Panticapaeum (present-day Kerch), and was a part of the Bosporus kingdom. It existed in the 1st − 3rd centuries A.D. The fortress defended the western approaches to the Bosporus from attacks of the nomads.
The settlement was built on a high plateau, surrounded by a wall and towers along the perimeter. Iluraton had two main wide streets intersecting at right angle, and several side streets. According to the archaeologists, the inhabitants of the settlement were engaged in agriculture and various crafts.
The remains of Iluraton can be seen in the vicinity of the today’s village of Ivanovka, Leninskiy district. The site was first surveyed in 1827.
